VOLUNTEER!

Why is it good to be a volunteer?

As a volunteer, you not only have the opportunity to give something truly good and useful from yourself when you teach recovering students on a weekly basis. This work can provide you with a supportive community and lifelong inspiration.

It develops your personality almost imperceptibly, opening you up in directions you may not have even known about. Through our training and continuous support, you not only gain knowledge, but also shape your social awareness.

Who are we looking for as volunteers?

University Students

We invite you to teach or mentor a young person affected by a chronic illness in your chosen subject, online or in person, on a weekly basis (1-2 hours/week), or you can hold group classes in study rooms organized in hospital wards.

You can teach with a predictable, flexibly planned task and schedule, which we will certify to your university. You can even take the KórházSuli course for credit. In return, we ask you to commit to at least one semester.

If you speak Hungarian, we would be happy to receive your application via our Hungarian-language page.

High School Students

Help elementary or high school students with their studies at the Mexikói út Movement Development School Dormitory—individually or in pairs with a classmate/friend, with flexible scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions about the KórházSuli Volunteer Program

As a volunteer, you participate in tutoring chronically ill children and helping them progress academically, which not only contributes to the continuation of their studies, but also supports their return to the peer community.

The application process consists of the following steps:

  1. Submit your application by uploading your CV and motivation letter. It is important that even if you have already taken a KórházSuli-related course at university, you still fill out the application to be entered into our system.
  2. Participate in our interactive preparatory training. Completing the training is a basic requirement for volunteering, and its purpose is to familiarize you with the world of sick children and to acquire the attitudes necessary for successful assistance.
  3. You can apply if you are under 28 years old. If you are taking a gap year or have recently graduated, that is not a disqualifying factor. If you differ from this but would like to help, please contact us.

Volunteering is for one semester, which can be extended or concluded. We ask for at least one meeting per week with your student, which can be more if your time and energy allow. You must complete a minimum of 14 hours of practice by the end of the semester.

The location of learning (in person or online) is determined by the distance from your student, mutual agreement, and current pandemic measures. Despite its name, KórházSuli typically helps recovering children during their home period, covering the time between hospital and school, although learning sometimes begins during the hospital stay. We also operate study rooms in the pediatric psychiatric wards of some hospitals, where in-person group sessions take place.

Learning pairs are formed with the involvement of the volunteer, based on a student database from which you can see who would like to request help. You will receive additional information about the student’s age, interests, and illness, as well as the form (online/in person) and purpose of learning.

It rarely happens that a pair does not match well. If it does, we first provide assistance with connecting. If this does not work either, we do not force it—you will get another student and they will get another helper. The goal is for the change to happen to the satisfaction of both of you.

We are continuously here as a safety net. You will have access to all our professional materials through the KórházSuli App, and we also provide special training opportunities and mentoring.

  • You must keep an e-journal of your joint sessions, which our staff monitors daily, so we can provide immediate assistance if needed.
  • You must participate in a mandatory case discussion held by professionals each semester.
